13 May 2024 --- Higher consumption of most ultra-processed foods (UPFs) is linked to a “slightly higher” risk of death, according to a 30+-year US study. The researchers found the strongest association for ready-to-eat meat, poultry and seafood-based products, sugary drinks, dairy-based desserts and highly processed breakfast foods. Moreover, a higher diet quality seems to mitigate these associated risks. The team cautions not to restrict all UPFs equally, noting that their findings “provide support for limiting consumption of certain types of UPFs for long-term health.”
