Rousselot receives European patent for SiMoGel solution
30 Nov 2021 --- Rousselot, a Darling Ingredients’ health brand, has been granted a patent application by the European Patent Office (EPO) for its functional gummies gelatin-based solution SiMoGel.
The company states that this gelatin-based solution optimizes nutraceutical gummies’ production process and enables producers to bring tasty and competitive delivery forms to the market.
Additionally, SiMoGel produces nutraceutical gummies using a starch-free process that provides the hygienic conditions needed for supplements.
“The new patent helps ensure our intellectual property is fully protected. Our R&D teams investigate all the potential uses of the collagen molecule in a variety of application areas, including health & nutrition, biomedical and functional ingredients,” Caroline Brochard-Garnier, director of communications & PR at Rousselot, tells NutritionInsight.
“The patent will allow our customers to bring new products to market faster than ever before, as they will benefit from our knowledge sharing on SiMoGel’s starchless molding technology.”
To further improve gummies as a delivery format, Rousselot released the SiMoGel-based process solution, which enables the production of center-filled nutraceutical gummies, also known as gummy caps.
This concept combines the benefits of soft gels and gummies in a single delivery dose – making it the first of its kind to be launched on the nutraceutical and pharmaceutical markets.
The patent granted by the EPO is effective in all major countries in Europe and is currently pending in Brazil, Japan and the US.
Gelatin-based solution
SiMoGel was formulated with a gelatin-based application as this provides benefits such as limitless options for consumers regarding medicine and vitamin consumption, the company flags.
“We are committed to using gelatin as the preferred excipient in this application, as we believe its many functional benefits and natural origins bring endless possibilities for consumers to enjoy their daily vitamins and medicines,” explains Marit van der Heijden, global marketing and project manager at Rousselot.SiMoGel enables the production of nutraceutical gummies using a starch-free process.
Rousselot’s team is looking forward to applying the SiMoGel concept in collaboration with its customers to create innovative products, such as 3D gummies, coming with visually appealing and palatable shapes, she continues.
“Our teams of food and nutrition experts are particularly eager to provide formulation support and help nutraceutical and pharmaceutical players reach their new product development goals.”
This move comes at a time when nutraceutical gummies have proven to be a popular delivery form achieving a CAGR of 37.3% between 2016 and 2020, the company adds.
Rousselot’s previous moves
Rousselot has had a fruitful year with its collagen solutions.
Last week, the company stated that it would continue supplying its Peptan collagen peptides to athletes, including those training for the Paris 2024 summer games. The company also recently unveiled Quali-Pure, a range of gelatins with controlled purity suitable for biomedical applications with steady endotoxin levels.
The collagen solutions provider tapped into the skincare market with its Peptan Marine ingredient suitable for nutricosmetics and dietary supplements at the beginning of the year.
