07 Oct 2016 --- DSM, a global science-based company active in health, nutrition, and materials has launched a brand new process technology, set to revolutionize the omega 3 pharmaceutical and dietary supplement sector.
The unique 3C technology delivers highly concentrated (up to 85%) and customizable combinations of EPA (eicosapentaenoic acid) and DHA (docosahexaenoic acid) for both pharmaceutical and dietary supplement applications.
The highly efficient process technology will make high-concentrate omega-3 EPA + DHA more accessible and relevant to today's consumers, and provide brand owners with the versatility to innovate tailored health-focused products to meet consumer needs across a lifetime.
Back in June, FoodingredientsFirst reported on the upcoming technology.
Outi Armstrong, Global Head of Marketing Communications, DSM Nutritional Products Ltd, Human Nutrition & Health, told NutritionInsight, “This radically efficient technology provides DSM’s customers with the versatility to innovate with tailored, health-focused products with specific EPA and DHA ratios to meet consumer needs throughout a lifetime.”
"It will be a catalyst for category growth by helping to eliminate key known barriers to the consumption of omega-3 supplements, such as capsule size," Armstrong continued.
"In addition, DSM’s ability to provide its customers with high-concentrate, customized EPA and DHA combinations will help the pharmaceutical industry to formulate products where EPA and DHA are used as APIs."
"The 3C technology makes it possible to produce concentrated, up to 85% omega-3 products. The smaller and easier-to-swallow capsules mean consumers can receive the target health benefit in a single daily dose,” added Armstrong
Tobe Cohen, Vice President, DSM Nutritional Products, also commented, saying, "This new technology truly makes the oversized pills of traditional fish oil with low EPA & DHA omega 3 content a thing of the past."
In addition, the new 3C technology also aims to provide peace of mind through a consistent supply chain.
“Thanks to the ability of the 3C technology to effectively separate and re-combine DHA and EPA as tailored, high-concentrate combinations, sustainability and sourcing flexibility are maintained throughout the supply chain,” explained Armstrong, “For example, there is less dependency on raw materials with specific EPA and DHA profiles.”
The new technology hits the supplement market during a thriving time for omega 3. According to Innova Market Insights data, launches of supplements containing omega 3 in the first 9 months of 2016 are already equal with the whole of 2015. With numerous health studies continuing to highlight the importance of omega 3 in the diet, the omega 3 supplement trend looks set to continue.
Michael McBurney, PhD, FACN, VP of Science, Communications and Advocacy, DSM Nutritional Products, commented on the importance of omega 3 in the diet, saying, "A large and growing body of evidence shows that insufficient levels of omega-3 EPA + DHA may be associated with serious health complications for many Americans.”
Low levels of omega-3 are related to increased risk of cardiovascular disease, which is the leading cause of death among both men and women in the United States.
Currently, 95.7% of Americans are not consuming enough omega-3 EPA + DHA to reach cardioprotective levels, and DSM hopes that by making omega 3 more accessible to the masses, this rate can be improved.
To build awareness of its new technology and the benefit of omega 3 consumption, DSM has kicked off the "Modern Movement Forward" marketing campaign to inspire category change through 3C technology.
The company has also launched a new line of next generation omega-3, called MEG-3, produced with its 3C Technology. You can read more about
