Nestle Health Science scales GLP-1 nutrition support for weight loss with new platform
27 Jun 2024 --- Nestlé Health Science has launched its GLP-1 nutrition support platform, specifically designed for individuals working toward weight management, including those using GLP-1 medications.
The nutritional science company offers a broad portfolio of consumer health, medical nutrition, pharmaceutical therapies and supplement products across the spectrum of lifespan and healthspan.
The GLP-1 platform expands its services to provide expert-backed nutritional options to complement weight management, offering personalized solutions to address the unique dietary needs of individuals using GLP-1 medications.
“The launch of this innovative tool marks an important step forward in the mission and focus of our business. We reaffirm our commitment to empowering healthier lives through targeted, personalized nutritional solutions with this offering. We will continue to redefine health and wellness solutions and enhance the quality of life for those seeking effective weight management strategies,” states Anna Mohl, CEO of Nestlé Health Science.
In addition to products, the platform will offer product bundling and categories tailored to specific consumer demands across muscle preservation, gut health, micronutrient intake, hydration, skin and hair health and weight rebound management.
Weight management
According to the company, the total number of GLP-1 — a 30-amino acid peptide hormone — users in the US could reach 30 million by 2030, around 9% of the population. According to the National Center for Health Statistics, about 49% of adults in the country have tried to lose weight at some point during the year. One in 60 adults were prescribed a GLP-1 medication in 2023, expected to jump in 2024.
Consumers undergoing GLP-1 therapy can experience a loss of lean muscle mass due to a reduced nutritional intake resulting from a smaller appetite. The treatment can also have implications for gut health, hydration levels and the health and appearance of skin and hair.
Furthermore, individuals on GLP-1 therapy must ensure they are receiving adequate macronutrients (protein, carbohydrates, fats and fiber) and micronutrients (essential vitamins and minerals). Nestlé Health Sciences’ various brands, including Garden of Life, Boost and Nuun, help address these.
The platform also assists with personalized diet, lifestyle and supplement requirements through Nutrition Coach.
This development comes after Nestlé introduced Vital Pursuit, a new line of foods intended to be a companion for GLP-1 weight loss medication users and consumers focused on weight management in the US. The portion-aligned products help meet protein, fiber and essential nutrient requirements.
