Live from the showroom floor at the 2024 CPHI trade show in Milan, Italy, which kicked off today, we catch up with US-based start-up MiGuard to discuss its alpha-lipoic acid supplement. The company is showcasing the offering, which contains an ingredient blend developed to help prevent headaches.
“MiGuard is an all-natural headache nutritional supplement, mainly targeted toward migraine, tension and post-concussive type headaches. It has six ingredients, all vitamins, minerals or herbal compounds. It is all-natural, vegan, gluten-free, non-GMO, drug-free and non-habit forming,” Nicole Taimoorazy, manager of MiGuard, tells Nutrition Insight.
The six ingredients in MiGuard Migraine and Headache Relief are Feverfew, vitamin B2, ginger, alpha-lipoic acid, magnesium and coenzyme Q10.
“It is a preventive headache supplement. One bottle has 60 capsules, and you can take two every day — a bottle is a month’s supply. These are hygiene capsules with no gelatin,” she details.
“Like any other preventive medication or supplement, it takes about two to three weeks to start seeing the results, but slowly, the frequency of the headaches decreases.”
MiGuard is a natural supplement tackling diverse types of headaches.Product development and distribution
MiGuard was formulated by Dr. Benjamin Taimoorazy, a triple-board certified specialist and physician. “He researched this for about ten years, and in his medical practice, he was giving these six ingredients separately to his patients. Then finally, he compounded it into two tablets per day, as he wanted to give a natural option to his patients,” details Nicole Taimoorazy.
“Because he does prescribe the typical migraine medications, but he sees many side effects with those medications, especially in the younger population. Migraine headaches are mainly [experienced by] females. He wanted a natural alternative.” she continues.
Discussing how the product differs from other similar ones available on the market, Taimoorazy adds: “In the US, there are other supplements for migraines, but the main difference between MiGuard and other supplements is one ingredient called alpha-lipoic acid.”
“This is something we already all have in our bodies, but studies have shown that 90% of individuals with high-frequency migraine headaches are deficient in this alpha-lipoic acid, so if you supplement it, migraine frequency can significantly decrease.”
Further addressing the kinds of migraines MiGuard tackles, she specifically points to ocular migraine and vestibular migraine. “The pathophysiology of migraine headaches is all the same, so this will help all different kinds of migraines.”
Taimoorazy tells us that MiGuard has been on the US market for multiple years, mainly distributed through the company website, medical practices, Amazon, Walmart and federal pharmacies. The enterprise seeks to expand its customer reach to Europe, the Middle East and South America.
