Alvinesa Natural Ingredients acquires Chilean and Argentine grape upcycling experts
05 Jul 2024 --- The Chilean Industrias Vínicas and Argentine Dervinsa companies specialize in grape by-product valorization. Spanish Alvinesa Natural Ingredients reveals it has purchased the two companies and states the deal strengthens the group’s market presence in grape seed oil, tartaric acid and cream of tartar, as well as biofuels, functional foods, dietary supplements, grape tannins and polyphenols, functional additives for animal feed and both food-grade and industrial alcohols.
Jon Fernandez de Barrena, CEO of Alvinesa, states: “This operation aligns with Alvinesa’s strategy to remain a benchmark in upcycling — transforming natural waste into higher-quality products with greater ecological and economic value — and to continuously improve our offerings to clients.”
In 2023, Alvinesa achieved a turnover of €100 million (US$108 million) and is now anticipating a revenue of over €150 million (US$156 million) following the consolidation of Vinicas and Dervinsa.
The strategic interest of the operation
Fernandez de Barrena details several aspects of the new deal that are of strategic interest.
He points to the benefits of gaining access to raw materials extraction in the southern hemisphere where the harvest season complements that of the northern hemisphere. This will likely reduce price fluctuations for clients, while ensuring product availability all throughout the year. Additionally, the deal grants access to a greater range of active ingredients.
Alvinesa is also expanding its production capacity by acquiring three additional centers, which will add to its two current facilities operating in Spain.
The company aims to strengthen its commercial presence in all of the Americas and the US in particular.
Another strategic aspect of the deal for Alvinesa is its deepening commitment to the circular economy through its engagements in the grape-derived ingredients industry.
As part of the expansion, Alvinesa appoints Juan Humberto Fernandez Del Campo, who formerly worked with Coca-Cola, Heineken and Altadis, as its chief sales officer. Moreover, the parties have agreed in the deal to entrust the marketing of GSO produced in Argentina to Provence Huiles.
Alvinesa focuses on the valorization of co-products into natural ingredients for health. Its portfolio offers natural products derived from grape and olive pomace.
Alvinesa is active within the food, beverage, nutrition, animal nutrition and winemaking industries, producing polyphenols, colors (anthocyanins), natural tartaric acid, wine concentrate, grape seed oil and food-grade and industrial alcohols.
