Vitamin C Has Beneficial Effect in Women with Gestational Diabetes
23 Mar 2016 --- Use of antioxidants markedly reverses the oxidative stresses in women with gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) with marked improvement on neonatal outcome.
Two-hundred pregnant women with GDM were randomized into 2 groups: the first received 1 gm L-ascorbic acid (Vitamin C) per day and group 2 received placebo.
Researchers from Cairo University, found that the use of antioxidants significantly lower the needed insulin dose for blood sugar control.
Apart from citrus fruit, high doses of vitamin C can be obtained from bell peppers, cantaloupes, kale, strawberries, and papaya. Dietary intake is important as vitamin C cannot be produced in the body.
Vitamin C is essential to proper bodily functioning, most notably in healthy collagen production and repair of bone and skin.
